Atchison
The Atchison, Kansas
riverfront project is now in the construction phase; with phase I
being complete and phase II ongoing. The $4.5 million project is funded
from a combination of federal, state and private monies. The project
was completed in time for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial National
Signature Event in Atchison July 3-4, 2004. The reconstruction project
included:
A Veterans Memorial Plaza, with contemplative areas and walkways, large
flag poles and commemorative stone pillars listing Atchison County residents
who have died in wars from the Civil War to present.
The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Pavilion features a panel describing
a general overview of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 - 1806;
the history of the Missouri River and how it has changed since 1804,
including conservation, ecology, and recreational aspects; a panel
specific to the Lewis and Clark site on which the pavilion is located;
and a description and history of the Kanza Tribe that was indigenous
to northeast Kansas at the time of the Corps of Discovery Expedition.
The pavilion also includes an interactive touch screen. This computer
touch screen allows visitors to view all Kansas sites, both accessible
and inaccessible; to find out how to locate and visit accessible sites,
each of which has an interpretative sign at the location; to view
photos of the fish and wildlife along the Missouri River basin and
the native grasses and flowers that were growing in the time of Lewis
and Clark; to learn more about the history of the Kanza Nation, as
well as the four resident Native American tribes in Kansas today;
to access the history of Atchison. It was founded only 50 years after
the expedition and is also celebrating its Sesquicentennial in 2004;
to access a guest registry that will count the number of visitors
to the pavilion site; and to learn about the corporate sponsor supporting
the construction of the pavilion, including business information,
hours of operation, special events, etc.
Other project items include a lighted seat wall and walking trail, the
River Road has been relocated to bluff allowing for more green space next
to the river, the children's play park consisting of a replica keelboat,
play equipment to replicate a fort and a small children's wading fountain,
